GNU Hurd Description
GNU Hurd is an open source project that tries to replaces the Linux/UNIX kernel, with a collection of servers that run on the GNU Mach microkernel, implementing file systems, file access control, network protocols, etc. GNU Hurd provides a familiar user and programming environment, making it compatible with other similar projects. However, it has an object-oriented structure, which helps it evolve without compromising its design. By design, GNU Hurd is modular. This means that most of its components are running as separate user-space processes, which means that they are using different address spaces that are isolated from each other. Originally supporting the IA-32/x86/32-bit architecture, the GNU Hurd software also provides experimental support for the x86-64/64-bit platforms.
