DNA Metafiles Description

The molecular structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) was first described by Watson and Crick in 1953. Basically, the DNA structure is comprised of two anti-parallel polynucleotide chains arranged in a double helix. The phosphate and sugar backbones are on the outside of the molecule with the bases pointing inward. Adenine (A) and guanine (G) residues on one chain pair via hydrogen bonding to thymine (T) and cytosine (C) residues, respectively, on the opposite chain. The precise arrangement of A, G, T, and C bases along each chain effectively codes the genetic information contained in each cell and provides a means to transfer this information to offspring. Watson and Crick received the Nobel Prize for their discovery. DNA Metafiles will illustrate the DNA's molecular structure in the following Windows metafiles -- carbon (black), nitrogen (blue), oxygen (red), and phosphorus (yellow): A_DNA.wmf This is the more compact arrangement of DNA. The most striking features of the A-DNA structure are the relatively high high tilt of the bases (20
