HexView Description

HexView is a simple and portable application that lets you view the hexadecimal code of any file easily. Its features are simple to figure out, thanks to the overall simplicity. As installation is not a prerequisite, you can just drop the program files anywhere on the hard disk and run the executable immediately. Alternatively, you can save HexView to a USB flash disk or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any workstation with minimum effort. An important aspect worth mentioning lies in the fact that the Windows Registry section does not get updated with new entries, and leftover items do not remain on the HDD after removing the program. The interface of the tool is made from a standard window with a simple layout, where you can import files using either the file browser or drag-and-drop functionality. Aside from viewing hex code, you can disable the toolbar or status bar, go to the next or previous block, split the window, as well as jump to a particular offset. There are no other notable options available in this program. For example, you cannot copy part of the hexadecimal code or save it to file for further evaluation. HexView is very light on the system resources, using a minimum amount of CPU and memory. It has a good response time to commands and works well, without causing Windows to hang, crash or pop up error dialogs. We have not encountered any issues in our tests. All in all, this app provides limited functions for letting you only view hex code, without making any adjustments. We must also take into account that HexView has not been updated for a very long time. Reviewed by Elena Opris, last updated on July 13th, 2013
